Dubai Urban Elements Design Challenge

The Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), under the leadership of the Dubai Government, in collaboration with Buildner, presents an international design competition inviting architects, designers, and visionaries to rethink the small-scale elements that shape Dubai’s public spaces. This initiative calls for a reimagining of human-scale architecture, focusing on the everyday details that foster community, enhance urban life, and contribute to the city’s evolving identity.

Participants are challenged to develop a cohesive design concept across seven distinct zones, each with its own unique character, density, and rhythm.

Participation: Free

Total prize: 500,000 €

Terms of Participation: open to all, regardless of professional qualifications or experience.

Participants must develop designs for a variety of proposed urban infrastructure elements for each of the seven zones, including but not limited to:

Each zone must have its own unique and context-sensitive set of small-scale architectural forms.

Design Scope:

• Pedestrian/bicycle bridges
• Pedestrian/bicycle/vehicle underpasses
(including wall cladding)
• Street furniture
(benches, seating, trash cans, bike racks, etc.)
• Shading structures
• Pedestrian and cyclist road marking and signage systems
• Safety structures
(bollards, fences, concrete barriers)
• Project signs and temporary fencing
• Lighting
(street lighting, landscape lighting, decorative lighting)
• Amenities
(pumps, repair stations, maintenance vehicles)
• Pavement work
(surface treatments, curb stones, sidewalk design)
• Other elements identified by the design team and not listed in this summary document
These designs must meet the following criteria: functionality, safety, and comfort for residents and visitors.

Designs should respect the specific design criteria set for each of the seven identitied zones:
• Residential 1
• Residential 2
• Suburban
• Comprehensive • Industrial
• Historical and Artistic

• High-End Each design should contribute to a unified urban language while allowing for area-specific identity.
