Sustainability is no longer just a trend; it’s an essential part of our future. The design world is embracing this change with innovative solutions. Tokyo-based design studio we+ has teamed up with Algal Bio Co. Ltd. to create a remarkable project: SO-Colored. This project harnesses the incredible potential of microalgae to create furniture that is both aesthetically pleasing and environmentally responsible.

Microalgae: The Material of the Future
What exactly are microalgae and why are they so important? These ubiquitous microscopic organisms aren’t just found in ponds; they’re essential to our ecosystem. Producing a significant portion of the oxygen we breathe, microalgae could also be the key to a sustainable future.
The SO-Colored project explores the diverse color palette of microalgae. These organisms, which can be green, red, yellow or even blue, are inspiring the design world with their natural pigments. Unlike synthetic dyes, these natural colors are environmentally friendly.

From Microalgae to Furniture: The Story of Transformation
The most impressive aspect of SO-Colored is its ability to transform microalgae into a material used in furniture manufacturing. The powdered microalgae are mixed with natural resins to create a unique composite material. This material is then used to create eye-catching and eco-friendly furniture designs.

Microalgae are a rapidly renewable resource, making them ideal for a circular economy.
The use of natural resins ensures that this material is biodegradable and does not harm the environment.
The natural colors of microalgae give these furniture pieces a distinctive aesthetic. Each piece is like a work of art from nature. SO-Colored demonstrates the effectiveness of solutions inspired by nature and highlights the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration.

The SO-Colored project is a collaboration between design studio we+ and microalgae specialist Algal Bio Co. Ltd.
