Netherlands Makes Great Strides in AI: €200 Million AI Factory to Be Established in Groningen

The Netherlands is preparing to establish an AI factory in the city of Groningen, aiming to solidify its leadership in the Artificial Intelligence (AI) sector. This strategic investment, totaling 200 million Euros, is set to become a significant innovation hub.

The Dutch government is contributing 70 million Euros to the project, while the Groningen/North Drenthe region will provide an additional 60 million Euros under the ‘Nij Begun’ Economic Agenda.

Furthermore, approval is pending for 70 million Euros in co-financing from the European Union, requested by consortia such as SURF, AIC4NL, TNO, and Samenwerking Noord. Once all funds are secured, the total investment will reach 200 million Euros.

Dutch Minister of Economic Affairs, Vincent Karremans, stated, “Artificial intelligence will fundamentally transform our economy and society. But if we don’t develop this technology ourselves, we will become dependent on others,” thus highlighting the country’s resolve to safeguard its digital independence and competitiveness. This factory is also seen as part of a broader European effort to reduce reliance on US and Chinese companies.

For the AI factory, the Groningen Region boasts a strong network of education and innovation, the necessary technical expertise, and sufficient grid capacity. The facility will be brought to life through the conversion of a former Niemeyer tobacco factory, transforming an industrial heritage site into a hub for future technologies.

The AI factory in Groningen will bring together entrepreneurs, researchers, and public institutions. The facility will support AI applications for key sectors such as agriculture, healthcare, energy, defense, and manufacturing. Companies will be able to experiment with AI applications, securely store data, and utilize a supercomputer with extraordinary processing power.

The facility is expected to become operational in 2026 and reach full capacity by early 2027
