IJburg Architecture

5 Floating Living Spaces on the Water


Europe’s largest floating housing development, IJburg, features 213 homes on waterproof concrete ‘tubs’. Flexible cables and steel mooring piles secure these structures, enabling them to naturally rise and fall with water levels and eliminate flood risk. Marlies Rohmer Architects & Urbanists completed the project in 2011, utilizing lightweight steel and panel superstructures for stability.
