The Woodson African American Museum of Florida, in St. Petersburg, has garnered four major design awards in 2024 and 2025. This project, conceived as both a cultural landmark and an example of sustainable architecture, showcases STORYN Studio for Architecture‘s innovative approach to museum design. Led by founding principal Everald Colas, the team’s vision embodies the principles of Afrofuturist Architecture.

Museum Architecture

Spanning 40,000 square meters, the museum will house four permanent galleries, an orientation theater, and a dedicated space for traveling exhibitions. The building’s exterior is composed of organically shaped precast concrete panels, which are inspired by the patterns and forms of Zulu beadwork necklaces. These panels symbolize the deep roots and enduring influence of African craftsmanship. The project’s eco-friendly design approach is uniquely adapted to St. Petersburg’s climate conditions.

Inside, the “Grace Staircase” ascends linearly from the entrance hall, optimizing access to the exhibition spaces. With a 1.8-meter step width and a 32% slope, the staircase ensures a seamless flow for visitors. Adjacent to it is a 4,000-square-meter multi-purpose event space that can host both official receptions and community events.

The facade’s organic form and precast concrete panels are inspired by African crafts. The design team has meticulously crafted the surrounding green spaces not merely as landscape elements, but as active social hubs adhering to biophilic design and green architecture principles. This approach enriches the museum’s physical and sensory experience.
