Biophilic Design at Nana Coffee Roasters: Layered Architecture, Green Spaces Balance

Biophilic design principles guided IDIN Architects in creating a concrete and glass structure that stands out in the Bangkok architecture scene. As a cafe architecture project, it provides a balanced response to the challenges of the dense urban environment, earning its place as an example of award-winning architecture.

Cafe Architecture

The project is based on biophilic design principles. The cafe architecture blurs structural boundaries, creating a sense of fluidity between indoor and outdoor spaces. This award-winning architecture is a testament to sustainable architecture. Unlike traditional “wow” architecture, the space is designed to draw visitors’ attention directly to the coffee itself. Visitors are encouraged to focus on enjoying a quality coffee and experiencing the surrounding nature, rather than taking photos.

Urban Design

The building’s primary materials are modern materials such as concrete and glass. This concrete and glass architecture reflects the shadows of the surrounding vegetation, creating a dialogue with nature. White exterior walls serve as a canvas for the interplay of light and shadow, while mirrored ceilings bring the reflections of the plants into the interior.

Biophilic Design Nana Coffee

The project’s undulating countertop design, in addition to its ergonomic layout, also references the Northern Thai mountain ranges where coffee beans are grown. Seating areas are arranged like a ribbon spreading across the landscape and are centrally located. The cafe’s signage is designed with a more subtle approach, encouraging focus rather than drawing attention. The landscape architecture was undertaken by TROP: Terrains + Open Space, a firm known for its green space designs.

Concrete Glass Architecture

The Nana Coffee Roasters project was completed in 2022. It has won international awards such as the DFA Design Awards (Silver Award), the Golden Pin Design Award (Brand Award), and the 2024 ArchDaily Building of the Year, and was an A+ Awards Finalist.
