The New Conditions of Public Space

The future of cities now depends not only on architectural projects, but also on forms of social and cultural production.

Public space is now defined with new urban models responding to the climate crisis, mobile systems and social architecture initiatives.
In this transformation, research offices and biennials discuss how public space can become more inclusive, sustainable and flexible, urban labs develop experimental solutions, while public art collectives transform space into a living cultural stage.

It is possible to see these developments in the productions of some brands as well.Helsinki-based Artek emphasises the new identity of public space with its approach to “sustainable design and cultural heritage”, while Nikari highlights the human dimension of public spaces with its emphasis on “craftsmanship and contemporary design”. Working with natural materials, Vaarnii shows that urban spaces can be redesigned in harmony with nature. Woodio strengthens the ecological dimension of public space with its works themed around “nature and design”.

This transformation also requires visual and cultural documentation.

Urban observations and urban photography capture the traces of this transformation. Biennial selections bring these discussions to the agenda on a global scale.

Throughout September, DWN brings these contents together and examines the future of public space not only through architecture and urbanism, but also through cultural production, social participation and ecological sustainability.

Cities are no longer only built structures; they are dynamic organisms where social life, cultural production and ecological awareness coexist.
