Sauska Tokaj Winery, designed by BORD Architectural Studio, marks the intersection of architecture and gastronomy in Hungary. The project realizes the vision of Sauska, one of the country’s leading wineries for nearly two decades, on the volcanic slopes of Padi Hill. Situated within the UNESCO listed Hegyalja Wine Region, the design has been validated by the prestigious BLT Build Design Awards. The structure is designed as an estate center that seamlessly integrates with its surroundings despite its scale, centered around the concept of an Underground Winery.
When viewed from a distance, the structure appears as two sculptural bowls floating in the vineyard. These are two striking, lens-shaped volumes, each 36 meters in diameter. These above-ground masses house communal areas, including a restaurant and bar. They simultaneously offer visitors captivating panoramic views.
The architectural success of the Sauska Tokaj Winery showcases how this floating concept was realized by BORD Architectural Studio.
The wine production facilities, requiring stable temperatures and ample space, are entirely underground. These Underground Winery facilities feature impressive circular fermentation halls.
Inside, stainless steel tanks are arranged in concentric rings, with the oak barrel aging area positioned at the center. This system supports the goal of preserving the natural balance of the UNESCO listed Hegyalja Wine Region.
The arrival of grapes and the shipment of finished products occur via a tunnel that runs along the building’s longitudinal axis, a technical solution that explains why the project earned distinctions like the BLT Build Design Awards.
